Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas, also called Ashanti, was born on October 13 on the 13th of October, 1980 at Glen Cove New York United States. She is a singer, songwriter from America and actress. Her talent was first noticed in her teens. She was signed to Murder Inc. Records, in 2002. That same year, she was featured on Fat Joe's What's Luv? She also appeared on Fat Joe's song"What's Luv!" as well as the Ja Rules' track Never On Time, both of which became huge hit songs. It was the first time for a female artist to hold top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 list in the United States with Foolish at number one and What's Luv? She became the first female artist to hold both the top two spots on The Billboard Hot 100 list in the United States With Foolish as number one and What's Love? Tina Douglas, her mother, is a retired teacher of dance. Ken-Kaide Douglas is her father. She is the eldest and Kenashia Shia Douglas is her younger sister. Douglas chose the name Ashanti Shia Douglas in honor of her mother, who was from the Ashanti Empire in Ghana in which women were influential and powerful. Douglas wanted Ashantis to take this as a model. James' grandfather was associated with Martin Luther King Jr. as a civil right activist during the 1960s. Ashanti's mum discovered Ashanti's talent as she heard her singing Mary J. Blige's "Reminisce.. Ashanti appeared as an actor for Spike Lee's Malcolm X (released in 1992) and Ted Demme's Who's the Man? Also, Ashanti appeared in a few music videos, including 8-Off Ghettogirl and K.R.S. Act One MC's The People You've Never Even Met. After being courted for years by several record labels including Bad Boy, Jive and others, Ashanti was still struggling as a vocalist. In this midst, Ashanti played in New York. At the Murder Inc. Studio she hung out hoping to score a breakthrough. Ashanti was featured on the first time on the track of Big Pun, How We Roll, as a back singer. Other appearances she has made include The Fat Joe's song"What's Luv? and Ja Rule's Always On Time. She sampled DeBarge's 1983 single Stay With Me for her first single Foolish. Ashanti's self-titled first album was made available in 2002 via Irv Gotti's Murder Inc. record label. The Declaration the fourth studio album was released 3 June 2008. Hey Baby After the Club was released on the 16th of October to digital and radio outlets.
